A former assistant secretary of state for Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has accused a federal grand jury of covering up efforts to transfer tens of millions of dollars to government friends and government contractors.

The complaint filed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) stated that Saffarinia “received payments and loans from his friend in the amount of $80,000.”

“Saffarinia disclosed confidential government information to a friend and attempted to procure government contracts and provide benefits and competitive advantages to his friend’s business,” the DOJ said in the filing. 

“Saffarinia also failed to disclose this financial relationship in other high-profile documents and public financial disclosure forms.”

Safarinia was convicted of one count of concealing a material fact, three counts of non-disclosure, and three counts of tampering with documents or records. He faces up to 80 years in prison and will be sentenced on December 19. 

The case was investigated by the FBI in Washington and the Office of the Inspector General for Intelligence.
